Re: Buying ampeg v4
it looks pretty clean, but it also looks like it has the original filter caps. they may be fine, but will most likely need to be replaced sometime in the next few years. have you asked the seller when it was last serviced?

Re: Buying ampeg v4
How much do they go for usually in decent condition/working? And I decided to wait for another, so no I haven't asked. And to fix the caps/pots (I'm not to familiar on those topics as of right now
) do you just take it into a guitar center or something?

Lane, more often you find them unserviced. having the filter caps replaced is roughly a $250 job. (could be more or less depending on where you live)
I wouldn't go to GC for any kind of service.
some bozo kid will try to convince you to buy a mesa boogie instead of fixing your V4.
where do you live?

there is only a listing for houston in the texas repair tech forum. If you find anyone good in Dallas, post them in the texas forum.

Hey! I like my Mesa, too!
For what it's worth to the O.P, I paid $400 for mine (at a Guitar Center, where it was buried under a bunch of solid state bass amps...)
Actually, I think I talked them down to $300 because it had the original tubes...

Re: Buying ampeg v4
sorry... wasn't trying to bash mesa boogie or anything, more talking about my experience with lame guitar shops. Plus last time I checked guitar center doesn't do repairs on amps. I know because the seattle guitar center sends plenty broken mesas and other amps to me to repair.
mesas are fine. most of their amps are too complicated in my opinion, but they do have that sound.

Re: Buying ampeg v4
Just kidding, Hangman!
Seriously, though, I'd never take an amp to GC for repair, because, yeah, they just outsource them anyway. The fact that I found my V-4 practically buried and covered in dust was supposed to be a testament to what lame asses they really are. I'll go there to check out used stuff they bring in on trade, but generally take the meat of my business to a couple of local shops run by people I trust.
As far as Boogies go, I like the versatility they offer, but I'm no huge fan-boy or anything. I like the fact they're American made, and I've generally had pretty good luck as far as reliability goes. As for *that sound*, I've found mine's a pretty good platform for just about any sound I'm looking for. It's an older 2 channel Dual, but running it the way I do, you'd never associate it with Nu-Metal tones.
Having said that, if I absolutely *had* to pick between it and my V-4, I'd probably come down on the side of the Ampeg.....
I do wish it had an effects loop, though.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'd like to tell the original poster that while I got a great deal on my V-4, I would have paid twice as much and still felt like I got my money's worth.

Re: Buying ampeg v4
actually the 2 channel rectifiers are great amps, I had a 2 channel rectoverb back in the day, it was a great sounding amp, when they went 3 channel something got lost, the distortion sounded less pleasing.
I dig the F-series that they came out with a while back.
you make a valid point that at least they're still making their amps in the USA.
sorry we got off on a tangent Lane!
