Picked up a V4 cab today......

If there is no logo badge, what can we look for to guess a mfg year?

This one has a small alum badge "nailed?" To the back with a round, (3) screw plate holding a 1/4" jack.... No numbers on the plate, just ampeg v4 8 ohm... No paper serial tag inside either....

This one came with (2) Eminence 12442 round magnets and (2) Eminence 12442 square magnets... Going to sell those and pick up some 2512's one day.... Yes, I play bass.. smile

Speaker numbers can help.  There are pages on the net that list ranges of dates for various speaker codes.

Yeah I've dated the speakers but they are not original.  The square back are 84 and the rounds look to be 92.  sad
Date doesn't really matter, just think its cool to know.

Re: Picked up a V4 cab today......

On the cabs you are kinda stuck unless you have the speakers or pre 69 serial number on the back.
Are there magnavox tags inside the cab?   Usually magnavox would stick tags with modl name and serial number inside the cab.  But because the serial number system is not known from the magnavox era,  the serial number wouldn't help but to narrow it down.

No tags inside. My G60 6x10 cab had the tag you speak of, but this one unfortunately does not. Oh we'll still stoked I finally have a v4 cab!

Re: Picked up a V4 cab today......

The other thing is the connection.  Both of my V2 bottoms are 1972 (I am the original owner of one) and have the 4 conductor xlr type connector.  If your 1/4 connector is original, then that would put it later than 1972.  Though, I don't know if Ampeg every had a 1/4 jack on the V4 bottoms.

The tag on your back cover looks the same as the ones on my V2.

I am beginning to wonder if the plate and jack are non-original.  I dont remember seeing a jackplate like this on the Ampegs.

Also, my G60 cab was '75 and had a black label plate that was indented into the cab with one 1/4" jack....

Re: Picked up a V4 cab today......

A friend of mine had a master volume v4,  which would've made it a 1974-75 at earliest and his cab had the xlr connector too.  I'm not sure they ditched the xlr connector right away

Re: Picked up a V4 cab today......

The 1/4" jack is definitely an add on.  The jack barely fits in the hole in the wood and think it touches in a few spots..

And from some google searches the logo is the same as some early 70's b25 and such.. Close enough for me... smile
