Why Vol. 2 On my VT40 affects my tone while plugged into channel #1?

so i totally found my dream tone on this thing after noticing that while im plugged into channel #1, blending in some (a lot) of volume #2 adds beef and presence to it that's out of sight.

First off, is this normal?  Second, I keep Vol. #2 at noon while plugged into channel #1 where that volumes at roughly 9 o'clock. so, even though im only getting my volume level from my vol #1, are my power tubes working extra hard because my vol #2 is cranked twice as much as vol #1?

Thanks.

p.s. hangman:  i tried emailing you, have you received any email from me?

thanks again.
