Fliptops Ampeg V4 recap kit - anyone use them?
I ordered the kit to re-cap the V4 - but I have been reading anything I can on the subject... anyone here used their kit - can you describe, fit, difficulty, tips, function etc?
Do the caps mount in the same chassis locations as the riveted stock caps? the kit includes "clamps"... the kit has not arrived yet, however I like to know what I am up against if someone can share experiences with it...

Hi Wizard, I have no experience with installing this cap kit. I do remember looking at the instructions for one kit (I don,t remember who it was from), but I could not understand how it could work with the parts provided. The elements that make up a combo can can not be connected in series because they share the - ground terminal. Also it is a good idea to replace the 2 bleeder resistors with 2 watt metal film parts rather than re-use the old parts. This also easier than trying to unsolder and save those resistors. You will need to drill out the rivets to get the old cans out.

I'll chime in here too... although I like fliptops.net and I am glad they are around. I don't like their cap kits. as I understand it they use JJ can capacitors and Illinois axials.
both are second rate electrolytics in my book.
F&T and Sprague are the only brands of electrolytic capacitor that I would put in my amp.

Re: Fliptops Ampeg V4 recap kit - anyone use them?
On a whim I just picked up a vt-22 in great condition, even came w/ the dolly.
Of course its all original including the tubes, still plays strong.
Going to go thru it, re cap it and so on. A quick look around yields nothing to replace the 70/40/40.
The only one that has it is FLIPTOPS, my guess custom made for Bruce.
Has anybody found a source to that multisection??
Anybody know more about the can sold by flitops such as who makes it, USA, China??
http://www.fliptops.net/catalog/p-10015 … v-multicap
I usually make my own re-cap "kits" on tubes and more, but they dont have this cap

If you simply must replace the caps with identical parts, you won't find another option. I maintain that using an f&t dual 100uf for c18 and a dual 50uf with the sections tied in parallel for c20. Then c19 you use an axial 100uf.
This effectively doubles value of the filter cap in the screen supply, but I think the value was rather low to begin with. Also I could not hear a difference with the bigger caps. Its
Cheaper and the f&t caps are really solid.

Was reading your notes about using F&T caps instead of the flip top offerings. I don't need to keep it orig. and more filtering is good.
My take on your idea is...
- directly replace c20 w/ a 50/50 (soldered in just like the original)
- directly replace c18 w/ a 100/100 (soldered in just like the original)
- the 3rd section of c18 is omitted and c19 (25uf 800v) makes
up the difference
Here is what I think it should look like....

Re: Fliptops Ampeg V4 recap kit - anyone use them?
I see that you attached a picture but I can't see it for some reason.
Basically we are replacing c19 (40uf 450V) with a 100uf 450V. Then the negative side of that c19 is connected to one of the 100uf sections of c18.
The other 100uf section of c18 is connected to the negative terminal of c20. And the two 50uf sections of c20 are connected to one another.
You end up with an effective capacitance of 50uf for the reservoir cap and 50uf for the screen supply.

Re: Fliptops Ampeg V4 recap kit - anyone use them?
here is version 2 of my drawing based on your comment above.
Neg of c19 connects to + of one 100uf section of c18
other + 100uf section of c18 connects to neg of c20
Both sections of 50uf c20 are paralleled (same as original)
are both 100uf sections of c18 paralleled or are they electrically disconnected from each other????
how about making c20 100/100 (instead of 50/50)? That will yeild about 66uf
